Custom Charts Display Option: Calculate percentages of segments out of a single Bar, Row, or Line total

Overview

Originally in Custom Charts for Jira, users were only able to see the percentage of the total of an entire data set on a chart. Now, in 2D bar charts, 2D line charts, and 2D table charts, users have the option to display the percentage of the total of a specific data segment on a chart, i.e. the percentage of a single bar, line, or row.

What does this percentage display option look like in Custom Charts?

In the 2D Stacked Bar Chart below, each bar represents an Epic, and each segment of the bar represents the Status of issues in each Epic. The option to calculate the percentage of the single bar count is selected in the Chart Display Options. In the example, when the user hovers over the “Done” segment of the bar representing issues in Epic D, the percentage is 25%. That’s because there are 16 issues total in Epic D (see screenshot 1), and 4 are in the “Done” status (see screenshot 2). If the option were not selected, the percentage would be 6%, as it would calculate the segment amount out of the entire set of issues in every Epic (64 issues).

Steps to Enable the Percentage of Bar Display Option

With the gadget in Edit mode:

  1. On the right side of the gadget, click the cog icon to adjust Display options

  2. Under Chart options, in the Calculate % of dropdown, choose Bar Counts (for a bar chart), Line Counts (for a line chart), or Row Counts (for a table chart).

Use Cases

Understanding team capacity

Let’s say you’re using the Custom Charts gadget to create a 2D Stacked Bar Chart to represent the sum of Story Points per Assignee in each Sprint (Chart by: Sprint; Group by: Assignee; Calculate: Sum of Story Points), as we’ve depicted below. By utilizing the Calculate % of Bar Counts option, teams can gain a better understanding of how work is distributed throughout the team in each sprint. In our example below, when you hover over the section of the bar for Jane, you can see that she has 58% of the story points in Sprint 2 assigned to her. If you do the same for Carlos, you can see he only has 29%. By understanding the uneven distribution of story points, a team discussion around workload and reallocating story points might be beneficial to better support team members.

Understanding priority of issues coming from a customer organization

Using Jira Service Management (JSM), users have the capability to group service desk customers into Organizations. If you do use Organizations with your service desk, it can be extremely helpful for agents to get a good understanding of how many tickets of each priority have been submitted by each organization. With the Calculate % of Bar Counts feature, we can depict this easily.

In the example below, we are using a 2D Stacked Bar Chart in Custom Charts and pulling in issues from our Support project. We have the Chart By set to Priority, and the Group By set to Organizations. Using the Calculate % of Bar Counts feature, we can see below that out of the 10 high-priority issues, the Bluth Company has submitted 90% of those issues (9 out of 10). Knowing this statistic can be helpful to gain a better understanding of the customer, and encourage some important dialogue to determine why their issues are of such high priority.

Comparing Ratios of Segments

Want to take your data comparisons a step further? To compare ratios on a chart, you can pair this feature with the “Y-Axis Unit” (%) toggle to show bars at the same height so you can better compare the ratios.
